about

Vol 3 of 6 of percussionist Sameer Gupta’s JUPITER Project features a single track ‘Journey For Turiyasangitananda’ which is spontaneously composed in honor of the blessing given to and received by Alice Coltrane, and her spiritual teacher (for reference list to Journey in Satchidananda by Alice Coltrane). Gupta’s musical expression of how we receive messages from vibrations left by our ancestors continues with this next potent musical chapter. In the previous volume, we learn of a mystical radio receiver which received ghostly sounds that when tuned can result in otherworldly music. The receiver is referred to as an Akashic Radio, and through careful tuning and intentional listening, this volume reveals more about the journey that is woven throughout the impressions received by the Akashic Radio.

Gupta is joined by his quartet featuring Marc Cary, Pawan Benjamin and Rashaan Carter, helping him reflect on his journey by accessing his dual Indian and American heritage. Gupta’s JUPITER sets a luminous tone by acknowledging the everlasting need to embrace liberation, meditation and healing.

The piece is set to a backdrop of the Indian classical raga ‘Kaushi Kanada’ using alaap (rubato out of time phrases) samples of legends Annapurna Devi on surbahar and Rashid Khan on vocals. A bassline composed by Gupta provides a vehicle by which the ensemble reveals this journey.

Liner Notes:
Here is a pathway to get home,
though it’s not clear to be safe passage.
We know enough to know that
Easy beginnings are not always easy traveling.
Ancient voices guide our song, among the circuits
as the path widens and flows ahead.
The batteries disappear
Resonating frequencies fill our bodies
As we step toward an unknown
hidden corners and hilltops
raising the hair on our necks.
Voices feel close, singing voices, old messages.
The path feels right; more focused.
Every choice feels corrected, connected.
Large, small, a motionless movement.
Pure limitlessness
In a stillness of the moment.
We find the source, the path, the destination
Are one.
